Non-Round Grinding – explanation and applications

For nearly 50 years, Weldon Solutions has been at the forefront of producing high-quality CNC cylindrical grinders, leveraging the team’s manufacturing and service capabilities across many industries and applications.

As a builder of cylindrical grinders, most applications fall into two basic categories: Outside Diameter (OD) and Inside Diameter (ID).

These are typically thought of as “round” surfaces based on the word “diameter.” At Weldon, we don’t see it that way since we have been leading the way in Non-Round grinding for more than 30 years. Grinding a hexagon on a shaft (OD) or a flat inside a bore (ID) is as simple for us as grinding a round bearing journal.

Non-Round Capabilities and Features

Our Non-Round capabilities have allowed us to approach many applications from a totally different perspective and simplify the process of complex components. We have been able to reduce the number of operations and eliminate soft-state machining.

Here are just a few examples of Non-Round grinding applications:

  • Camshaft Lobes
  • Pump Cams (OD & ID)
  • Crankshaft Pins
  • Sheetmetal Punches
  • Power Steering Input Shaft Edges
  • Pharmaceutical Pill Punches
  • Aerospace Fastener Heads
  • Orthopedic Knees
  • Hydrodynamic Tri-Lobe Bearings
  • Polygon Couplings (OD & ID)

Let Us Show You The Way

Although Non-Round grinding has been around for a long time, the process is still often misunderstood. The math and kinematics behind it can be overwhelming. Included below is another video that shows Non-Round grinding in action.

Our proprietary EZPunch™ and EZCam™ software allows for simple Non-Round process development and is designed for machine operator use.

If you have an application that might benefit from Non-Round grinding, please contact us. We will develop and demonstrate a complete grinding process specifically for your part.
